I personally find it annoying every time someone points to a gay character and says "they're not proud enough!" As if somehow, they're less valid an individual because they don't point themselves out as gay.

It's ridiculous.

Dumbledore is not Gay: Taking Stories More Seriously than the Author, from an I.D.iot/professor from Biola University.

A few choice quotes:

  • "her opinion is interesting, but not determinative."
  • "I have always thought the books deeply Christian not because Rowling told me so... but because the text is full of Christian images and ideas."
  • "I do not react this way because Rowling has said something I find personally distasteful. I do find homosexual behavior contrary to nature and the laws of God."
  • "It does not matter if she had Dumbledore’s failings in mind as she wrote, since she censored it out so heavily as to be of no use in understanding her novel."

I find it strange and disturbing that if a character or person does not self identify, or fit the accepted stereotypes then who and what they are becomes marginalized. Dumbledore was a teacher leader and great man, his homosexuality was never important to the story because he was not the one we followed, he never told Harry because quite frankly it was none of Harry's business. We often forget that people are humans first and a sexual orientation is only a part of that. No one should be forced to wear a badge saying what they are, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Native American, Homosexual or Heterosexual. If we make them we might as well give everyone little red or yellow arm bands just like a famous dictator who will remain nameless.

Still, it's good to have positive role models, especially for the general audience of this series.

Oh, and Godwin's Law already? Srsly?

Godwin's law, is a very valid comment, I should have thought more before adding that last remark. A more general comment about required identification would have been more appropriate, and in fact there are far more accurate examples in history. I apologies.

Also I can not agree more about needing good role models, I hope Dumbledore works out well, the character could do a lot of good.
